A Swedish judge who resigned from a rape trial after one day of proceedings because of threats against her and her family is appealing for more public discussion of the situation - blaming the courts for deliberately covering up such threats.

The court first claimed the resignation was due to illness and not to threats.

The judge made her appeal in a debate article in the prestigious Stockholm newspaper, Dagens Nyheter.

The trail of 10 men accused of raping a 14-year-old mentally disabled girl continues in the southern city of Malmö with a new judge.

Earlier reports have listed a growing number of threats against judges, prosecutors and witnesses, and the smuggling in of weapons into the court rooms here in Sweden.

A bomb blast destroyed the door of the home of one Swedish prosecutor involved in legal proceedings against criminal motorcycle gangs.
