Boars Fed by Hunters in Skåne

Published onsdag 6 oktober 2010 kl 12.48
Hunting is leading to more piglets

Although the aim is to shoot them dead, hunting is actually causing wild boars to increase in number - due to being fed by hopeful hunters in the southern county of Skåne.

Nils Carlsson, at the county nature protection service, says to Skånska Dagbladet: "We have to stop this insane feeding. Many hunters have agreements with bakeries and shops to throw out tons of old food for wild boars in the forest."

The abundant sugar and fat means that the wild pigs are maturing earlier and reproducing in greater and greater numbers.

In a related story, hunters in Skåne county are training their dogs on how to tackle wild boar - due to the high frequency of injuries when facing this kind of prey.
