Swedish math instruction failing?
Math education in Swedish high schools is not making the grade, according to a new report from the Swedish Schools Inspectorate.
The study looked at 55 of the nation's schools and found that teachers do not have enough knowledge about the course plans. It also found that marks do not accurately reflect what the students know.
The study showed that most of the classroom time is dedicated to students doing mechanical calculations in their books, instead of to discussions that make sure they fully understand the lessons.
In the last few years, Swedish students' performance in math has fallen compared to their peers in other countries.
