This year's flu outbreak could be a killer, according to one of Sweden's top microbiologists. Speaking to newspaper Dagens Nyheter, the head microbiologist at Sweden's Institute for Infectious Disease Control says that an aggressive variant of the Hong Kong Flu is on its way, and could hit the country by Christmas.

Worst hit could be those with heart and lung problems, the elderly, obese and pregnant women, she says. Maria Brytting told the paper that hundreds, or even thousands of Swedes could be killed by the virus.

However, this year's flu jab contains antibodies against the Hong Kong Flu, and gives good protection, the paper adds. Pregnant women who weren't vaccinated last year should have the jab now, Maria Brytting says.
