The anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats joined a meeting of 6 far-right and populist parties in Vienna Saturday, where they called for an European Union-wide referendum before Turkey is allowed to join the EU.

The party's was represented by MP Kent Ekeroth, in the meeting hosted by the Austrian Freedom Party. Other parties present were Italy's Northern League, the Danish People's Party, Belgium's Vlaams Belang and the Slovak National Party.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache said that Europe would be "straying down the completely wrong path" if "non-European" countries were to enter the EU, news agency AFP reports.

The Sweden Democrats are anti-EU, and want Sweden to leave the European Union.
