Jan Eliasson Sweden’s New Foreign Minister

Senior U.N. official Jan Eliasson has been appointed Sweden’s new foreign minister. Eliasson is currently Chairman of the United Nation’s General Assembly.

He takes over after Laila Freivalds who resigned last Tuesday amid allegations that she lied about her involvement in shutting down a website that had posted satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. 

Last year, while still Sweden’s ambassdor in Washington, before taking over as President of the U.N. General Assembly, Jan Eliasson talked to Radio Sweden’s Christine Demsteader about diplomacy and foreign policy in the aftermath of 9-11:
