Stockholm Conferences on Lebanon, Palestinians

Published onsdag 16 augusti 2006 kl 14.07

Sweden is inviting delegations to 2 different international conferences in Stockholm – one scheduled for August 31st on the reconstruction of war-ravaged Lebanon and another conference the following day on the situation of the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

This conference is to be hosted by Sweden, Norway and Spain together with the United Nations and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Swedish Foreign Aid Minister Karin Jämtin says the UN supports the idea of having both conferences back to back – in order to increase the political committment to the Palestinians.

She adds that while the eyes of the world have been focused on the crisis in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza should not be forgotten since the humanitarian situation in the occupied areas is getting worse – and human suffering is increasing daily – especially in Gaza.
