Elfsborg Wins Swedish Soccer Title

Elfsborg has won the Swedish soccer first division title for the first time in 45 years.

The team from the southern town of Borås defeated defending champion Djurgården 1-0 in the last round of the season. That put Elfsborg one point ahead of Stockholm’s AIK, whose defeat of Malmö at home 3-0 was in vain.

Late in the first half, Elfsborg striker Joakim Sjöhage scored the only goal by latching on to a header from team mate Mattias Svensson and steering the ball into an open goal.

The win avenged a humiliating 8-1 loss to Djurgården in last year’s season finale.
