Weekend Sports: Soccer, Snowboarding, Hockey, Skiing
Helsingborg has won the Swedish Cup in soccer, with a 2-0 victory over Gefle in Sunday’s final.
Meanwhile, Swedish soccer league champion Elfsborg defeated AIK Stockholm 4-0 in Group 3 of the Scandinavian Royal League.
Matevz Petek won the opening World Cup Big Sir snowboarding meet at Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium Saturday. The Slovenian recorded 26.4 points in his opening jump to virtually clinch first place. The snowboarders started from a 35 meter tower and the total length of the ramp was 100 meters.
It was a disappointing weekend for Swedish ice hockey. Russia won the Karjala Cup after beating the Czech Republic in a penalty shoot-out Sunday. The Swedes finished third after beating Finland 1-0. And the Swedish women lost to the United States 7-0 in the Four Nations Cup, the first meeting between the teams since Sweden upset the Americans in the Olympic semi-finals in February.
There’s sad news for Sweden’s alpine skiers, as veteran Fredrik Nyberg’s career has come to an end, following a crash during training in Austria. The 37 year old tore ligaments in his knee and suffered alight concussion. Nyberg won seven World Cup races and competed in five Olympics, finishing fifth in the giant slalom at this year’s games in Turin.
