Bildt Opens Door to EU Talks with Hamas
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt says the European Union should talk to a Palestinian national unity government, even if it includes representatives from Hamas, which has been branded as a terrorist group.
In an interview with the TT news agency, Bildt says there is a vacuum in the Middle East now, and he thinks there is room for a more active European initiative. But, he says, a new Palestinian government with representatives from Hamas must at least indirectly indicate that it will abide by previous peace agreements and accept the right of Israel to exist.
On Monday Hamas and their rivals Fatah suspended talks on forming a national unity government, reportedly because of a lack of progress.
