Banning Pornography in Prisons

Published måndag 27 november 2006 kl 11.49

The Swedish penal authorities want to ban pornography in prisons here.

They say pornography is demeaning to women, and works against the treatment of sexual offenders.

Many Swedish prisons have already banned pornography in public areas and no longer allow television channels that show sex films. Now the Prison and Probation Service wants the ban to apply in all areas. There may be a problem in forbidding magazines, however, as that could be seen as a violation of the constitutional freedom of information.

Last week the prison service announced it was banning tobacco in all but special smoking zones.
