Blix Criticises British Nuke Upgrades

Former head UN arms inspector Hans Blix has criticised the British government for plans to upgrade its nuclear weapons arsenal.

The Swedish diplomat gave a lecture in London Monday evening. When asked about plans by the British government to replace its aging Trident nuclear deterrent, Blix said it is important for states which have a commitment to move away from nuclear to not act contrary to that commitment.

Blix, who currently heads an independent commission on weapons of mass destruction, also criticised international demands for Iran to suspend uranium enrichment before negotiations could begin.
