Does Wind Power Interfere With Radar?

Published onsdag 29 november 2006 kl 11.30
The wind farm near Kalmar

Swedish Radio News reports that the Swedish military has opposed the expansion of offshore wind power in this country, because of concerns over effects on radar.

The opposition is based on theoretical calculations that the spinning vanes could case a radar shadow up to a kilometre around large wind farms at sea. No one really knows what the effect is, and now the military is planning to find out.

More than half a million dollars has been budgeted for a series of tests monitoring various kinds of ships and aircraft around a wind farm in the Baltic off the city of Kalmar.

The Swedish parliament has approved the construction of hundreds of wind turbines, and around 60 percent of them are to be offshore.
