The time was when every young man in Sweden expected to be called up to do their national military service at one time or another.

While some other European nations such as France and Spain have now scrapped conscription, military service remains an integral part of Sweden’s non - professional army.

However, conscription today bears little resemblance to what it once did, even ten years ago. In part one of a two part Discover Sweden series, Dave Russell reports on a Swedish Institution, known to all, as ”Lumpen.”
