Arrests During Salem Demonstrations

Published måndag 11 december 2006 kl 11.36

Five people were arrested as extreme right wing protesters were kept apart from anti-racist counter-demonstrators in the Stockholm suburb of Salem Saturday night.

The right wingers gather there every year to mark the December 9, 2000 beating to death of a 17 year old skinhead by a group of teens with immigrant origins.

Police on horseback kept between around 500 anti-racists and the anti-immigrant demonstrators. The authorities say one reason the event passed off relatively calmly this year was because many of the right wingers were delayed by a sabotaged switch in the commuter train line to Salem.
