Crime-prone areas of Stockholm are to be placed under surveillance by police cameras.

A total of 16 cameras are to go up in the Stureplan area of central Stockholm, and in the Medborgarplatsen square in the southern part of the city. The police say the cameras will probably be set up in the spring, on a three year trial basis.

In a recent report the police said that overall crime fell by 2 percent in 2005 compared to 2004, but violence on the streets increased by 11 percent during the same period.
