Gothenburg Pulls Out Of Worlds Bid

Published torsdag 14 december 2006 kl 13.23

Gothenburg has pulled out of the running to host the World Athletics Championships in 2011 or 2013.

The Swedish Athletics Association withdrew the bid today after the government refused to help fund the event.

”Today’s decision from the government is a disappointment for athletics,” association chairman Yngve Andersson said. ”We had looked forward to having a big event in Sweden during the next decade.”

Gothenburg, in southern Sweden, hosted the 1995 worlds and this year’s European championships.

The association had submitted a bid for the 2011 or 2013 worlds even though the government had already indicated it would not help foot the bill. The association asked for 250 million kronor , that’s around 36.6 million US dollars, in support, but the government announced today that it would not contribute.
