Swedish Foreign Minister Praises Predecessor

Published onsdag 20 december 2006 kl 15.07

Swedish Foreign Minister and former conservative moderate prime minister Carl Bildt has warmly praised the appointment of his Social Democratic predecessor, Jan Eliasson, as the new United Nations envoy for Sudan.

Veteran UN diplomat Eliasson has been selected by outgoing UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to increase efforts to end violent attacks on villages and refugee camps in the blood-drenched Darfur province. 70 UN relief workers have just been pulled out of one of the giant camps there because of renegate militia attacks – leaving the refugees with no UN food deliveries.
