Sweden Recruits for Nordic Battle Group
Sweden has started recruiting for an emergency Nordic Battle group with action and violence-filled television adds for troops to be sent to crisis areas around the globe.
2,000 Swedes are to be enlisted in the Swedish-led group – which is also to include tropps from Norway, Finland and Estonia – and is to be ready this time next year.
The aim is to receive a United Nations mandate for each operation in such places as Somalia and Lebanon – and that fighting back may be an option – not just peace-keeping operations.
Other differences between this force and other international teams under the UN or in the NATO partnership for peace campaigns is that no specific target area is planned in setting up the group – and there are no limits set on length of duty.
