Bildt Defends Option Sale
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has welcomed a prosecutor’s investigation into whether there were irregularities in Bildt’s sale of stock options.
When he became foreign minister after September’s elections, Bildt promised to sell his options in a company heavily involved in Russia’s Gazprom gas and oil giant. Critics charged that he risked a conflict of interest in negotiations with Russia on a controversial gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea.
At a press conference Monday, Bildt said he acted exactly as he had promised. He said he saw no reason to forfeit his right to the options, which were his compensation for serving on the company board.
