Bishop wants end of term church service to be scrapped
The Church of Sweden’s Bishop of Uppsala, Ragnar Persenius, says it harks back to a time when the state, society and the church were a unified whole.
The bishop says end of term celebrations should include all pupils and should not involve prayers.
In a multi-cultural and secular Sweden, he says, to continue the services would mean inflicting violence on an unknown number of teachers and pupils, and the church itself.
He has also described morning prayers with psalms when he was at school as ”embarassing”.
