The United Nations special envoy for Darfur, Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson, is optimistic after his recent visit to the troubled region.

The former Swedish foreign minister says the chances for peace have increased. After a meeting with Sudan’s president last week, Eliasson said there is no military solution for either side.

But Eliasson also describes the current situation in the refugee camps as a cruel reality. According to the United Nations at least 200,000 people have died because of the conflict in Darfur, and more than two million are refugees.
