Calls to Declassify Merkel Letter

Published onsdag 24 januari 2007 kl 12.00
Angela Merkel and Fredrik Reinfeldt

There are demands that the Swedish government declassify a letter written by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

Germany currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, and the letter is believed to discuss plans to revive the EU constitution proposal, which was rejected after it failed in referendums in France and the Netherlands.

The vice chair of parliament’s Committee on the EU says that since the letter is officially not supposed to have any news, it should not be classified as secret.
