Emergency Aid for Sweden’s starving reindeer

Published torsdag 8 februari 2007 kl 11.18

Sweden’s Agriculture Ministry is going to give herders millions of dollars to help them feed their animals.

Authorities representing Sweden’s indigenous Sami people asked the government for funds after wet snow in the autumn froze, and the thick ice is now preventing the reindeer from reaching the lichen they eat.

There are around 230,000 reindeer in Sweden which are used primarily for their meat, and their skin and horns are turned into clothes and handicrafts.
