Bad gene for boys protects girls

Published torsdag 8 februari 2007 kl 11.45

Swedish researchers have discovered that the same version of a gene which can increase the risk of young men becoming alcoholics lowers the risk for women and vice-versa.

Scientists were also shocked to find the same thing when they looked at another gene which is linked to depression.

The short version of the gene affected girls negatively, but it was the long-version which could increase the chance of boys suffering from the illness.

The surprise finding came after a study in the towns of Uppsala and Västerås involving people aged 16 to 19.
