Calls for Pippi Longstocking to be put on Sweden’s coins
Anti-monarchists say Astrid Lindgren’s world famous character is a better symbol of modern Sweden than King Carl Gustaf.
The call is coming from the founder of Sweden’s Feminist Initiative organisation, the former leader of the Left Party, Gudrun Schyman, and the anti-monarchy group Republikanska Föreningen.
They say as well as the fictional 9 year old Pippi, her creator, should also be featured on the coins. 2007 marks the one hundreth anniversary of the birth of Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, who died in 2002.
