Anti-Immigration Proposals

Published måndag 7 maj 2007 kl 12.09

Ahead of its annual meeting later this month, the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrat party is outlining how they would like to see the country’s immigration policies tightened.

The Sweden Democrats say permanent residency permits should be scrapped and it should take 10 years of residence to get Swedish citizenship, instead of the current four to five years.

The party, which enjoyed a large increase in support in the last local elections, is also proposing a ban on religious buildings being built if designs don’t follow traditional Swedish architectural styles.

The Sweden Democrats’ annual meeting was planned for last month, but had to be postponed after conference venues in Sweden, and even Denmark, refused to host it for fear of violent protests.
