Blue Collar Support for Sweden Democrats

Sweden Democrat rally

The Swedish Trade Union Confederation says it is dismayed to learn that more than 4 percent of its members voted for the far right Sweden Democrats in last September’s General Election.

The anti-immigrant party enjoyed a surge in support locally, but if it was down to the blue collar workers alone, they would also have won a seat in parliament.

The confederation blames dissatisfaction with the more established parties and says this doesn’t necessarily indicate that union members supported the party’s xenophobic policies.

The Swedish Trade Union Confederation is seen as a traditional voter-base for left-of-center parties, in particular the Social Democrats.
