Swiss Investigation into Gripen Bribes

Switzerland has become the fifth country to start investigating allegations of bribery surrounding deals to buy or rent Swedish Gripen fighter jets.

Prosecutors in Sweden, Britain, the Czech Republic and Austria are already looking into the claims.

The investigation here followed a TV documentary earlier this year which alleged that bribes were offered to get the Czech Republic to buy the aircraft. The Czechs later leased 14 Gripens instead.

The Swedish manufacturer SAAB formed a 50-50 venture with Britain’s BAE Systems to try to secure international deals. It’s not clear yet why Switzerland is also investigating corruption allegations.
