Accusation of Chinese Interference

Swedish Member of Parliament Göran Lindblad has accused the First Secretary at the Chinese Embassy in Stockholm of trying to put a halt to his speech in Brussels on the democratization of China.

Göran Lindblad of the Conservative Moderate Party claims to have received a phone call from Chen Jinxiang who allegedly advised Lindblad not to travel.

The Swede said he was not surprised by the attempt to influence him saying: ”Communist regimes and other dictatorships work like this.”

As vice chairman of the Council of Europe and its former rapporteur on crimes committed by Communist regimes, Lindblad says he is used to threats and intimidation attempts.

Chen Jinxiang admits to news agency TT that he spoke with Lindblad but says he’s done nothing more than exchange thoughts. Lindblad plans to meet the First Secretary later this month and also intends to take the issue up with the foreign ministry.
