Many Sweden Democrats on Welfare

The far right Sweden Democrats, long complaining that many immigrants live on state welfare, are now being cast as hypocrites.

The tabloid Aftonbladet has done some number crunching and reports that some 20 percent of elected Sweden Democrat politicians are living off disability pension. More than one-third are dependent on some form of financial support.

According to the paper, these figures are higher than those for immigrants.

Party leader Jimmie Åkesson dismisses the criticism by saying it’s wrong to compare the two. Speaking to Aftonbladet he said that many facing early retirement were dissatisfied with how they were treated by their old parties and looked to new political movements.

The Sweden Democrats are currently holding their party congress in Karlskrona.
