Parliamentary Disestablishment

Published måndag 28 maj 2007 kl 11.31
Not all members of the Church of Sweden, the Swedish Parliament

After the Swedish state separated from the Lutheran Church of Sweden several years ago, it seems individual members of parliament are also turning their back on it.

More than one-third of MP’s aren’t members today, including Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, even though until the late nineties, every baby born in Sweden was automatically a member of the national church.

While 75 percent of the general population are still members,  the newspaper ”Metro# reports that only 64 per cent of members of parliament are. The Left Party has the least, while the most faithful are those in the rural-based Center Party.
