Swedish Dogs Have Super Bug

Published onsdag 30 maj 2007 kl 13.07
A culture of MRSA bacteria

Man’s best friend has been found to carry the MRSA super bug, an antibiotic-resistant infection that is rife in hospitals.

Sweden’s National Veterinary Institute has described the development as a public health problem. The institute warns that some dog types are both the source and carriers of the infection, often spreading it to veterinary staff and other people.

The first recorded case of a dog contracting the virus was in Stockholm last year, with further cases reported since then.

Tests at one vet’s clinic showed that 13 out of 71 members of staff were infected with the same strain of MRSA bacteria as the dogs.

The source of the infection is still not known.
