Published torsdag 28 juni 2007 kl 12.43

Swedish art-lovers are celebrating the highest ever price paid for a Swedish painting sold at auction.

”August Strindberg’s ”Alplandskap I” fetched 4.3 milllion US dollars at Sotheby’s auctioneers in London, comfortably beating its expected selling price of three million dollars.

”Alplandskap I” was painted in 1894, when Strindberg, was 45 years old, a time when he was broke.

Strindberg, on of Sweden’s most celebrated writers, was born in Stockholm in 1849, and died in the Swedish capital in 1912.

Strindberg’s ”Alplandskap” was the highlight of the auction of 18th and 19th century Scandinavian art, that included some 120 works by the likes Edvard Munch, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn.
