Weapons from Balkans on Black Market

Published onsdag 25 juli 2007 kl 13.23

The police claim that a growing flood of illegal guns is flowing into Sweden, with tens of thousands of such weapons floating around the country.

The police maintain that guns found at the scene of crimes or confiscated in police raids are ever more often foreign imports.

They add that many of these weapons were produced in the Balkans before and during the wars there, and are now reaching the international black market. The police add that reduced border controls for the new eastern members of the European Union have made it easier to smuggle illegal weapons into the West.

The Swedish authorities say they are now putting more energy into EU co-operation to combat the illegal gun imports.
