Many Complaints of Hate Crimes

Published tisdag 31 juli 2007 kl 11.48
Homophobes may target Stockholm Pride

Stockholm police’s hate crimes bureau has received more than 80 cases to investigate since the beginning of June - and staff are struggling to cope, according to a report from the TT news agency.

The news comes at the start of Gay Pride week in Stockholm the largest pride event in Scandinavia.

Annika Lindahl, the police project leader for the initiative, says that the bureau has been overloaded and that it is not possible to manage all the reports that are coming in. Although five people from the Stockholm police force are staffing the bureau,  fewer are working there over the summer months.

A request for more resources and investigators has been made to the commissioner of police.

The hate bureau scheme will be evaulated in October of 2008, when it will be decided whether to continue with the project and expand it, or bring it to an end.
