On the road in Stockholm!  Congestion charges go into effect today.  Backers hailed the six-month trial as a success but motoring organisations have slammed the tax.

The United Nations Security Council, together with the African Union, will send up to 26,000 peace keeping troops to the troubled Darfur region. Though most of the troops will be coming from other African countries, a number of European nations, including Sweden, have already offered to help with the mission. George Wood reports:

Today Stockholm joins the growing number of international cities to introduce a road toll scheme. After being run on a six-month trial basis, the congestion charge was approved in a referendum of Stockholm residents last year, and given the green light by the Swedish parliament in June. Nick Chipperfield can tell us more:

The Drottningholm Palace Theater is situated next to the Royal Family’s permanent residence, just outside Stockholm. While it is a favorite destination today, it was largely forgotten during the 19th century.
