Tennis Victory & Soccer Hooliganism
In tennis, Sweden’s Thomas Johansson caused a major upset at the ATP Washington Classic tournament, seen by many as a warm-up for the US Open grand slam, which starts later in August.
Johansson, who won the 2002 Australian Open, beat defending champion Arnaud Clement of France in three sets and moves into the third round of the competition.
The problem of soccer football hooliganism reared its head again in the Allsvenskan league match between Hammarby and Malmö.
The referee considered abandoning the game after Hammarby supporters hurled objects on to the pitch. Numerous crowd problems last year left the Stockholm club with the most Swedish Football Association disciplinary fines out of all the Allsvenskan teams.
Hammarby beat Malmö 1-0 to go fifth in the league.
Halmstads BK and reigning champions Elfsborg are joint leaders.
