Fathers Not to Give Away Brides

Published fredag 21 september 2007 kl 12.30
Not in Sweden

The Stockholm Diocese of the Lutheran Church of Sweden is recommending its vicars not to allow the fathers of brides to give away their daughters at the altar, as it isn’t conducive to sexual equality.

One vicar who refuses to allow the practice in her church is Vicar Yvonne Hallin, who says it is built on the idea that the daughter is owned by the father and then passed over to the husband and is very sexist.

More and more Swedish brides are wanting their dads to give them away after being influenced by films from the USA and Britain, where it is tradition, something it hasn’t been here in Sweden so far.
