Nobel laureate Gerherd Ertl

Gerhard Ertl of Germany has won this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on chemical processes on solid surfaces.

The Nobel Committee said Ertl’s work has helped the chemical industry understand such varied processes as why iron rusts, how fuel cells function and how the catalysts in our cars work.

News of his win reached Ertl while he was already celebrating his 71st birthday.
