Climate Debate: Air VS Tracks

Published fredag 12 oktober 2007 kl 11.00

When it comes to planes, trains and automobiles - Green Party co-spokesperson Peter Eriksson and Member of Parliament Karin Svensson Smith are in favour of keeping travel to the tracks.

Writing in Göteborgs-Posten they say that in order for Sweden to meet its climate goals, trains will have to replace flights on all long haul trips where high-speed trains are viable.

Their plan sets a five year goal and includes economic considerations and the laying of more tracks between cities.  Specifically, they would like to discontinue flights between Gothenburg and Stockholm.  According to Eriksson and Svensson Smith, when it comes to the environment - the greatest villain within the transportation system is the aeroplane.
