Swedish abattoirs slammed over hygiene
One third of Sweden’s major slaughterhouses have unacceptably poor hygiene, that’s according to the Swedish National Food Administration.
Six of the 18 abattoirs inspected by the agency were found to harbour stomach and intestinal viruses dangerous to humans.
One strain identified in many abbatoirs was the EHEC strain of ecoli, which exists benignly in the intestines of animals but can cause severe reactions in humans such as inflamation of the intestine and diarrhoea.
Some two hundred people contract the virus each year in Sweden.
