Swedish Church Open to Gay Weddings

Published torsdag 25 oktober 2007 kl 10.42

The Lutheran Church of Sweden has opened the door for gay weddings.

On Wednesday the annual synod of the former state church discussed a proposed gender neutral marriage law. If adopted by parliament, it could force the church to perform gay wedding ceremonies.

The meeting voted by more than two to one to face the issue by, maintaining the status quo. Opponents of homosexual marriage had wanted the church to give up its right to perform legal weddings.
