History Not A Thing Of The Past Says Minister
History is to become a compulsory subject in Swedish Upper Secondary Schools.
Education minister Jan Björklund says that history is one of the most important subjects in schools, but has been basically treated like something the cat dragged in ever since the Second World War, and that the time given to teaching history has shrunk and shrunk. Something Björklund wants now to reverse.
The new history course will become obligatory in 2010, and both other political parties and Teachers Unions have welcomed the move.
