Murderers to Get Life in Prison

Published torsdag 6 december 2007 kl 14.25

Prison sentences for murderers could be set to rise in Sweden.

A new government report says those convicted of murder should expect to receive a minimum of ten years in prison but could serve up to 18 or a life sentence.

Minister of Justice, Beatrice Ask, told news agency TT that she has long argued for more stringent punishments for serious crimes and that murder is one of the worst. She says ten years in jail for murder isn’t enough.

The new proposals will now be up for discussion and could be in force within the next year.
