Ferries Operating With Doors Open

Published torsdag 13 december 2007 kl 12.14

The Swedish Maritime Administration is to begin inspecting all large car and passenger ferries that operate in Swedish harbours.

This came after they discovered that several overseas ferries had their watertight bow doors open whilst at sea. According to current Swedish regulations only modern ferries are allowed to keep their doors open whilst at sea, due to the fact that their doors can be closed easily if the need arises.

In the last few years the Swedish Maritime Administration has discovered many foreign registered ferries that have had their doors open and had been given permission by their home authority even though they did not comply with the set international standards.

This included one ship from the Viking ferry company and one from the Polish company Pool Ferries.
