Swedish Church Reserves Word?

Published torsdag 13 december 2007 kl 12.21

The Lutheran Church of Sweden has said that it is in favour of same sex couples being allowed to wed and will put forward a proposal for legislation to the government.

However, they have also said that they believe the term ‘marriage’ should be reserved specifically for heterosexual couples.

In an interview with Swedish News Agency, Arch Bishop Anders Wejryd, said that he considers the term ‘marriage’ to be used traditionally only for men and women.

In response to criticism of the proposal he stated they had come far with the issue of homosexual members within the Lutheran Church of Sweden. He added, that a few years ago this proposal could not have been written.
