New Id Card System May Come Into Effect

Published fredag 14 december 2007 kl 11.49

A solution to the problem of people being unable to obtain id cards in Sweden may be around the corner.

A government investigation has proposed the introduction of a new id card to be issued by the police.

This is in response to the crisis that hit many people with immigrant backgrounds in Sweden that found it hard to obtain an id card after the rules were changed last year.

This in turn made it impossible for them to do simple tasks such as open up a bank account. Although not compulsory, it’s hard to get by without an id card in Sweden.

If the proposal for the new card is approved, it will be available to anyone over the age of 16 in Sweden.
