Calls for Limits on Passport Applications

Published måndag 17 december 2007 kl 10.45

Concern over human trafficking and identity theft has prompted calls for limits to be imposed on the number of passports issued by Swedish authorities.

At present, there are no restrictions on the number of passports for which an individual can apply if they report their passport lost or stolen.

After a Swedish Television report uncovered widespread abuse of the application process, politicians are urging authorities to adopt stricter controls when issuing replacement passports.

The report also found that thousands of Swedish passports were unaccounted for, with many feared to have obtained by counterfeiters and human traffickers.
