Bird Flu Alert Raised

Published onsdag 19 december 2007 kl 10.50
Nothing to worry - yet

Amid more cases of bird flu reported from countries around the Baltic Sea, Sweden raises its alert level.

As of today, the official level is raised from stage one to stage two, a spokesman of the Department of Agriculture confirmed. The higher alert means that poultry has to be kept indoors and that neither bird exhibitions nor competitions are allowed.

But the spokesman also pointed out that the measure was merely preventive as no cases of the deadly virus H5N1 had been found on Swedish soil this winter.
